A top sheet is a flat sheet that is placed on top of the fitted sheet (which covers the mattress) and beneath the blankets, comforter, or duvet. It enhances comfort, temperature regulation (as it makes layering more flexible), and keeps the comforter or blanket hygienic by acting as a barrier between it and the sleeper.
